Choosing the right portable auger length for your operation

Balancing reach, elevation, and capacity

Choosing the right portable auger length isn’t just about fitting grain into a bin. It directly affects how efficiently you can unload trucks, how easily you can position equipment, and whether your auger becomes a bottleneck during harvest.

The HOSS Portable Auger is available from 57’ to 112’, giving you options to match your bin diameter, eave height, and yard layout. We offer options for hopper heights that fit virtually any wagon or trailer.

Larger bins require more reach and elevation to clear the eave without running the auger at an extreme angle that can reduce capacity. A longer auger also provides better clearance over tall trailers and more flexibility when unloading on uneven ground.

Transport considerations are equally important. The HOSS is designed with under-14’ transport height and manageable road width so longer models remain practical between sites.

The key is balancing reach, elevation, and capacity with how you actually operate. Selecting the right length ensures smooth grain flow, fewer repositioning adjustments, and a system that supports your current setup while allowing room to grow.

How long of an auger do I need for my grain bin?

Select your HOSS auger size and length to see reach, discharge height, and transport dimensions at 30° and 40°. Please note that for easiest operation, choose an auger with a discharge height that is at least two feet higher than your bin peak height to allow extra clearance and easier positioning. The 30° chart should be used as the primary reference for determining reach and elevation. The 40 degree angle shows absolute max discharge height for extreme conditions for tall, narrow bins. Additional spouting may be required as the auger is at a steeper angle than standard bin roofs.
